This study endeavors to provide some insight by comparing three popular products, Microsoft App-V, VMware ThinApp and Citrix XenApp, with respect to the success rate, start-up time and memory usage.
Findings Comparative Study Application Virtualization
As expected, it appears that the differences are considerable. The traditional MSI is the most successful and efficient. ThinApp is the fastest, but uses a lot of extra memory. App-V delivers the most successful virtualization product packages, but is not outstanding in terms of speed. XenAPP has difficulty packaging large numbers of applications and is often the slowest.
Background Comparative Study Application Virtualization
In recent years, there has been talk of a massive explosion in application virtualization. With this technique, instead of installing applications on the hard disk in the traditional way, applications are separated from each other and from the underlying operating system by running them in a virtual environment – the bubble or sandbox. This reduces the number of conflicts and provides a degree of flexibility in the area of application deployment and management.
